Judging Vienna

So, as I watched Ms. PChipz on BeeTV last night, I also indulged in the season finale of The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love.  No lie.

In the episode, Vienna (a final contestant) met Jake's (the Bachelor) parents.  It was a high stress moment, as Jake's family judged Vienna based on what they knew about her: that the girls in the house disliked her.  As soon as they met her, they passed a judgement that a girl who was openly disliked by twenty women couldn't be the right woman for Jake.  As they got to know Vienna, however, they felt bad for judging her.

I'll admit it; I'm not a Vienna fan.  However, last night's episode drudged up a memory: the night I met Mr. Pencils' parents.  Let's go back.

It was February of 2004.  We were freshman in college and silly eighteen year olds.  Mr. Pencils' (now eighteen year old) brother was twelve, and his family lived a mere forty minutes away from our college campus.  One Sunday evening, we made the trek to a seafood restaurant in his hometown and I met them.  His wonderful mother, his funny stepfather, and his sweet little brother.

However, at the time, I had a boyfriend.  I met Mr. Pencils' family as a "friend" and yet we all agree- it was pretty obvious there was more there.

I wonder what Mr. Pencils' family must have thought of me- this crazy girl from Idaho who had some sort of ties elsewhere, coming to meet the parents. Was I fling? A friend? A passing ship in the night?

Six years later, I know my future family loves me- and they tell me so often.
My handsome future brother-in-law!

I can't help but wonder- what were the unspoken thoughts going through their minds?  If there had been a video camera to capture that night, would I have been a Vienna or a Tenley (the other contestant)?

How did your first meeting of the parents go?  Spill!
